Let’s go Bananas for Fairtrade – Fairtrade Schools Campaign!
The Plymouth City Council (PCC) Education Catering Service held a successful launch event for the Fairtrade Schools Campaign at the Council House in January. The council campaign is supported by CAFOD Plymouth, and is designed to empower the young people of Plymouth to see how they can make a difference to others around the World!
The project, headed by Katie Fremlin and Sandra Corbett (PCC Education Catering Service), linking with Clare Mains (PCC Facilities Officer – Sustainability), is working with Primary Schools to encourage them to learn about Fairtrade and complete the Fairtrade Schools Award with the Fairtrade Foundation.
Pupils from 10 primary schools including out fantastic CAFOD supporting schooles of Keyham Barton Catholic Primary School and The Cathedral School of St Mary, attended along with several local Fairtrade ambassadors and companies including the Cooperative, Fairtrade Foundation and Koolskools Fairtrade uniform.
Cllr Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Cooperatives and Community Development, introduced the event and took part in the Fairtrade festivities with the students! These included sampling lots of tasty Fairtrade products, an interactive photo booth and making Fairtrade bath-bombs with Lush.
The project is continuing within individual schools, with support form the PCC Education Catering Service and CAFOD Plymouth. Several schools have already set up Fairtrade tuck shops, held Fairtrade Coffee mornings for parents and petitioned to have more Fairtrade products on the school menus. All 67 PCC Education Catering Schools are currently using Fairtrade sugar and Fairtrade apple juice daily.
There will be a further central event held later in the year to celebrate the progress of all Fairtrade schools, and encourage further schools to take part in the campaign. CAFOD Plymouth hopes that all of our fantastic CAFOD supporting Catholic schools in the city will sign up this year to become Fairtrade Schools though this brilliant campaign.
