Marking Refugee Week we’re celebrating all of the fantastic stories we’ve been hearing a sharing of all of the Share the Journey actions that have taken place and are planned around the Diocese of Plymouth .

Bishop Mark helped us start our Share the Journey action by leading our campaign day at Buckfast Abbey on 5th May; opening the event with a powerful address on the Holy Father’s campaign, which inspired us all to immerse ourselves in the campaign and revisit our own stories of migration and refugees through his personal reflection and encouragement.

Speaking at the event we also heard from Shakirul Islam, Shamsun Nahar & Omar Faruque from CAFOD’s partner OKUP organisation in Bangladesh, about their vital work protecting migrant workers from abuse and supporting them afterwards. We were also joined by Libby Abbott from CAFOD’s campaign team who gave us a great overview of the Share Journey campaign and Nick Hanrahan from JRS who talked about their work with refugees in the UK.

At the Share the Journey event, organised by CAFOD and the Diocesan Justice and Peace commission, CAFOD volunteers and supporters joined J&P activists began to plan their campaign actions together.

Over the past few weeks parishes have been organising their Share the Journey walks and campaign actions around the diocese, and schools have organised whole school community and staff walks too! We have been inspired to hear about all of the actions and hope to hear stories from many other communities about their actions too; please  let us know your plans and share your stories and pics by emailing plymouth@cafod.org.uk

…in the meantime see below a few of the beautiful photos from St Mary’s Abbey, Buckfast’s combined parish Share the Journey walk.

Taking Action – Mass Lobby of Parliament: Your Chance to Speak Up for the Things You Love

The things we love are threatened by climate change – but we can protect them by urging politicians to act.

Speak up for the love of.....

Speak up for the love of…..

2015 is a very important year for the Church and the wider world with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (post Millennium Development Goals) being launched in September and the key UN Climate Change talks in Paris in December and Pope Francis’ long awaited encyclical on integral development and creation due to be released possibly this summer. CAFOD is working hard to ensure 2015 is a success for our brothers and sisters in the global south and that the deals reached can lead to a world were all people can flourish and live life to the full and where creation is protected for future generations around the world.

On June 17th, join thousands of people for a day of action and celebration as we speak to our MPs and tell them why fighting climate change matters to us.

CAFOD Plymouth and the Climate Coalition have arranged subsidised transport to London via train from Cornwall and Devon, and from Dorset by coach.

There’ll be workshops, music, entertainment and a rally finale – bring your friends to speak up for the things you love that could be lost to climate change!

This will be the biggest ever UK MP climate lobby, and the first mass lobby of the new government. Let’s not lose what we love to climate change, just because no one knew we cared.

Together we can witness to new government how much we care for our brothers and sisters around the world and our concern that Climate Change is pushing them deeper into poverty. Please do pray and reflect on whether you can join CAFOD to add your voice at this crucial lobby and ensure that our MPs hear and take action to protect our sisters and brothers in the global south.  Please feel free to encourage your family and friends to come and join us.

For more information or to book your funded place call 01364 645 440

For more information on the lobby and to let CAFOD know you’re coming to the lobby please click http://www.cafod.org.uk/speakup

The lobby event runs from 12.00–5.00pm.  Train leaves Plymouth 07:48 and leaves London 19:03 and arrives back in Plymouth 22:26.

Oscar Romero: Clare Dixon’s reflections on his beatification

Great article by CAFOD’s inspirational head of Latin America and Caribbean Clare Dixon on Blessed Oscar Romero beatification.

CAFOD blog

Brothers, you are killing your fellow countrymen. No soldier has to obey an order to kill. In the name of God and in the name of the suffering people I implore you, I beg you, I order you, stop the repression!”

Clare and Ben at the tomb Clare and Ben from CAFOD at Oscar Romero’s tomb

On 23 March 1980, Archbishop Oscar Romero called on the army in El Salvador to disobey their government and lay down their weapons. He must have suspected that by doing so he was signing his own death warrant.

About the author: Clare Dixon is Head of CAFOD’s Latin America Department and a trustee of the Romero Trust. She reflects on Archbishop Oscar Romero’s beatification today.

The next evening, Romero was celebrating a memorial Mass in San Salvador. The church doors were open and he probably noticed the car drawing up outside. An armed man climbed out, took aim…
